Gardenation

I’ve been planting up a storm around here and holy crap is it hard work. Shoveling, wheelbarrowing, lugging buckets of water and containers of soil, ugh. And two weeks until my next chiropractic appointment! There will be much Taking Of The Advil and Moaning.

I’m going for a new theme in the raised bed this year. In the past, I’ve always had one area that does remarkably well and other areas that fail horribly, leaving bald patches in the soil. I’ve given each plant or seed the space begged for on its little stick or packet, and I’ve catered to its needs meticulously.

Yeah, that’s all out the window this year.

‘Shrooms and berries

Pardon the quality of these pics, taken on my iPhone. I still thought they were worth sharing.

I saw this yesterday:

and told Dave all it needed was a caterpillar smoking a hooka. He had no idea what I was talking about, so I didn’t explain. Read the rest of this entry »

Update across multiple categories

I’ve spent the past couple weeks making wedding invitations for my lovely friend Justine, watching my garden evolve as some crops have completed their life cycles while others have begun to flourish, spending time with visiting friends and family, helping plan another romantically fast-tracked wedding, and most important, making pla-a-a-ans [insert picture of me tapping fingers together, muttering "Mua ha ha ha"].

Garden update: Odes to the produce

Inspired by yesterday’s bounty (pictured below) as well as a comment from a new reader, I have composed some verses to celebrate the literal fruits of my labor. Please enjoy.

What’s going on around here??

I’ve taken to picturing my brain like the Windows Task Manager. Here’s the breakdown of what’s going on up there:

55% is chugging away at the plot of Hottie Farmer…which might now be called Summer Moon…see? Chugging away. I’m trying to keep this part set to subconscious so that I can let some thoughts evolve. I have a few particular ideas about what may happen, some more grandiose than others. I think I’m ready to write the next scene, so that should be along shortly. Also, thanks to Sada, I know at least one person is actually reading it, so that gives me a little boost. But seriously, more than half my brain is chugging chugging chugging away at this.

Fruit and flowers!

Exciting things are happening in the garden these days. I swear it changes daily. I skipped a day this past weekend, and when I went back out there, my tomato plants had grown a foot! Everything is flowering. Well, except the peas. We had a little tragedy. Some wild turkeys busted into the garden last week and shredded a bunch of my pea plants and stressed the others, so they’re a bit behind schedule. I’ve had to retrain the vines (well, what’s left of them, at least) up the cage, and I had to fence the garden in, which means weeding is going to be tough. I have to actually move the whole fence to weed now. Like I needed another excuse to avoid this annoying task. Ah, well. Here are some shots of my victories. It took all I had in me not to post, like, ten pictures of the potato flowers. They are so pretty – and awfully photogenic, I must say. Enjoy!

Inch by inch, row by row

Time for some pictures of the garden!

Things are growing, things are green, some things are starting to flower. Some things that were decidedly not growing (I’m talking to you, Christmas Tree Shop Dahlia bulbs!) have been replaced. For the first time in my three years of gardening, my garden is an ongoing work-in-progress, not just a spring project that gets pushed aside once beach weather hits. Then again, I may be speaking too soon, seeing as beach weather has just barely hit.
