I (finally) bravely read through my rough draft this morning and it’s not that bad! Meaning I think it’s actually pretty good and not nearly as rough as I’d suspected.
I had a little critique session with my friend who read the manuscript last week, and a lot of the things I thought needed to be done I actually already did while I was writing the first draft, so that’s cool. Overall, we decided I have good bones, but I do need to seriously amp up the drama.

Here are the books I’ve read in the past 4-5 months, reviewed in 140 characters or fewer a la Twitter. (Character max does not include citation or this would never work.)
An Abundance of Katherines by John Green: I want to hang out with these guys. And with John Green. I hope the footnotes are specific to this book and not a JG habit.

I’ve always had this idea that when famous people who I admire win awards, they have kind of a blow-on-fingers buff-on-shirt moment and then go on about their fabulous and successful lives. I also imagine that my favorite writers sit down to write, and it’s no big deal, and they are very confident and have no demons thwarting their efforts, and they just plod through and write amazing things (all with perfect grammar and no need to edit or revise).
This is why I love the Internet.

1. I don’t talk about politics EVER if I can avoid it. I am the political black sheep of my family, and I’ve always found it easier to keep my mouth shut. From this habit, I’ve developed a strong respect for people’s right to vote privately. No matter what you say or don’t say outside of that polling booth, no one has a right to know which little box you fill with indelible ink.

Actually, the project totally has a name, but it’s such a good one and I’m so proud of it that I am keeping it secret.
But that’s not important right now.
What is important is that today it is being read by REAL HUMAN EYES for the first time. In fact, I haven’t even read back over it myself. But my (brave) friend and fellow writer Sada has been pressing and pressing for first look and I finally gave in, because I know she’ll be nice to me (right Sada?). Right now I just need someone to say it has some nice moments and it’s worth it to finish up. Because man, is it rough!

From the Freakonomics blog.
My favorite part:
“Although I will say I was somewhat disappointed with the book, an outside observer would laugh at that description, given that I read it in less than a week. My kids would remind me that I told them they would have to make their own dinner because I had to finish the book to find out whether Bella would turn into a vampire or not. I guess the fact that I ordered the other three books in the series from Amazon also gives me away.”

In my head, this thing works like a mini paper shredder: you take the bazillion photos from that trunk that could be so conveniently repurposed to hold something other than poorly focused pictures taken in your dorm room sophomore year and you feed them in, one at a time to the waiting mouth of this happy little device. It gulps them down one by one and, without any interaction with the software, when you’re finished, you have a folder on your computer of hi-res jpegs.

UPS has finally made with my box of Meg Cabot and Sarah Dessen love (along with pointy German tweezers, a new showerhead, and a humidifier – you gotta love Amazon), so this weekend you know where to find me. That’s right, I’ll be curled up in my bed researching how to become Meg Cabot – minus the wheat allergy. (I’m not completely obsessed, I just subscribe to her blog, and she happens to be quite forthcoming about her dietary restrictions.)

New feature alert! “Song stories” is my new category for short fiction pieces inspired by music. I’ve been wanting to do this for a while. This piece is inspired by “Take Me Now” by The Cars. The lyrics are here.
Remember: This is fiction, people! Fiction! Sometimes I feel the need to point that out.

they don’t tell you about this part. there you are, up ahead, blurred through all the tulle, but I can see you. or i just know you’re there. step together, step together. behind me is our history and on all sides, the faces, everyone we’ve known and everyone they know. here they all are in this room and they are blurred like you are blurred but i know they’re there and i can feel them like i feel god above. slow down and breathe.

From Room to Write: “Make a list of truths, one for every year of your current age.”
Here is my list for today, mind you it’s filtered through the Colbert definition of truthiness.
1. It is a given that any time I sit down to write, Dave will inevitably enter the room and start asking me a million questions (proven yet again as I typed the header for this post).
2. When an Italian Greyhound runs around in circles, it could mean any of a number of things: I’m hungry, I have to go take care of business, you are a stranger and I find you exciting, due to genetic defect my left legs are shorter than my right legs, you are a stranger and I find you frightening, I’m hungry, I have to pee.
