Inspired by yesterday’s bounty (pictured below) as well as a comment from a new reader, I have composed some verses to celebrate the literal fruits of my labor. Please enjoy.

Garden update: Odes to the produce
Frog: A thinly veiled allegory
Once there was a frog. All his life, Frog lived in a quiet pond. It was a pretty pond made of rocks, with a nice red maple for shade. Each day of his childhood, Frog would sit on his favorite rock in the middle of the pond, catch flies at leisure, watch the orange and white koi swim by, and enjoy the quiet, peacefulness of his pond.

Good advice on creativity
I did not write this letter, but I might as well have, and I really like Cary Tennis’s response.
Awesome typo!
One of the Google searches listed in my stats today is:
“clap 5 times say i believe in ferries”
Ha! Next time we’re rushing to make the boat, I’m trying this!
Book review: Summer Sisters
I wanted to read Summer Sisters by Judy Blume for another example of writing that takes place on Martha’s Vineyard. My sister had given the book the big L-U-V, so I figured it must be well-done, because the sis can’t handle misrepresentation of her island. She’s probably even more critical than I am.

What’s going on around here??
I’ve taken to picturing my brain like the Windows Task Manager. Here’s the breakdown of what’s going on up there:
55% is chugging away at the plot of Hottie Farmer…which might now be called Summer Moon…see? Chugging away. I’m trying to keep this part set to subconscious so that I can let some thoughts evolve. I have a few particular ideas about what may happen, some more grandiose than others. I think I’m ready to write the next scene, so that should be along shortly. Also, thanks to Sada, I know at least one person is actually reading it, so that gives me a little boost. But seriously, more than half my brain is chugging chugging chugging away at this.

So sad
Yesterday, two much-loved Vineyard establishments caught fire. During a day of celebration, this was such a shock. The newly renovated Cafe Moxie has been lost, and I hadn’t even gotten in there yet. So sad for the owners – people put their hearts and souls into their businesses around here – and for the town.
The Bunch of Grapes Bookstore has lost much of its merchandise to smoke and water damage. This is the bookstore where I used to buy Baby Sitters’ Club books in junior high, sci-fi in high school, then SAT prep, college catalogs, dog training books, art books, home building guides – you could write my biography in receipts from this store. Hopefully they’ll be back in action soon; in the meantime, they’ll be sorely missed.
Happy Fourth of July!
To all my friends here in Edgartown, where Fourth of July is a holiday favored over Christmas for some, with its parade and its fireworks and its longstanding traditions of where to watch the parade and the order in which to hit every barbeque: We’ll see you at the usual spot at the usual time, which will be running ten minutes behind, as usual, riding down the parade route on our bikes in our red, white, and blue finest, cutting up one-way streets because no cars are on the road, and we can. Happy Fourth!

Fruit and flowers!
Exciting things are happening in the garden these days. I swear it changes daily. I skipped a day this past weekend, and when I went back out there, my tomato plants had grown a foot! Everything is flowering. Well, except the peas. We had a little tragedy. Some wild turkeys busted into the garden last week and shredded a bunch of my pea plants and stressed the others, so they’re a bit behind schedule. I’ve had to retrain the vines (well, what’s left of them, at least) up the cage, and I had to fence the garden in, which means weeding is going to be tough. I have to actually move the whole fence to weed now. Like I needed another excuse to avoid this annoying task. Ah, well. Here are some shots of my victories. It took all I had in me not to post, like, ten pictures of the potato flowers. They are so pretty – and awfully photogenic, I must say. Enjoy!
